Project overview

An enabling-works package preparing a sloping plot for a phased development. The objective was to move as little material off site as possible, which meant balancing cut and fill across the plot rather than digging to a single level and carting the difference away.

Haul roads, drainage and the site entrance were built first, so that everything after them had somewhere to run on and somewhere for water to go.

Scope of work

What was built.

  • 01Topographic survey and earthworks volume balance
  • 02Clearance of vegetation and existing structures
  • 03Bulk cut and fill, with material re-use on site
  • 04Temporary haul roads and site entrance
  • 05Formation compaction and testing
  • 06Temporary drainage and silt control
Approach

How it was built.

Tracked excavator cutting a trench on a sitePLATE 01

Volumes were calculated from the survey before plant arrived, so that the cut and fill balanced across the site and haulage off site was minimised.

Fill was placed in layers and compacted to specification, with test results recorded at each layer rather than assumed from the machine passes.

Temporary drainage and silt traps were installed before bulk excavation, not after the first heavy rain.

Challenges & solutions

What the site presented, and what was done about it.

Every project has two or three decisions that determined how it went. These are the ones worth writing down.
01

Challenge

A significant level difference across the plot with limited budget for material haulage.

Solution

Cut and fill volumes were balanced from the survey so that excavated material was re-used on site, which removed most of the haulage and the tipping cost with it.

02

Challenge

Heavy seasonal rain risked washing loose material onto the neighbouring road.

Solution

Cut-off drains and silt traps were installed ahead of bulk excavation, and exposed faces were left no larger than could be dealt with in a single wet spell.

Outcome

A prepared and tested formation ready for the first construction phase, with earthworks balanced on site.
